Services

Among adults aged 70 and older with hearing loss who could benefit from hearing aids,

fewer than one in three (30 %) has ever used them.

Even fewer adults aged 20 to 69 (approximately 16 %) who could benefit from wearing

hearing aids have ever used them.

Hearing Evaluations

During a diagnostic hearing evaluation the professional will thoroughly evaluate the functioning of your middle ear, as well as inner ear.  The test protocol we follow evaluate the middle ear and the inner ear systems separately by using different objective measurements.

The results of such an evaluation will indicate if there is a deviation in the functioning of the auditory system, how severe the effect on the hearing and the site of deviation.

Thus, when leaving our practice you will leave with a tailor-made plan of action, e.g. to visit an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist for management,  wax removal, the fitting of a hearing aid, to follow a tinnitus management programme, etc.

Costs for hearing evaluations can be claimed from all medical aids at medical aid tariffs.  Discounted cash tariffs also apply should you choose to not make use of your medical aid or does not belong to a medical aid scheme.

Industrial Hearing Evaluations

Legislation (Instruction 171) requires a worker employed in the industrial/mining sector to meet certain medical fitness criteria to fulfill daily duties at work.

The initial evaluation for such fitness is done at certain industrial clinics.  In cases where a person does not meet fitness criteria due to a hearing problem, he/she is referred to an audiologist for diagnostic hearing evaluations and reporting on findings.

At our practices these specialised tests are being done daily as we work with major mining companies in the area.

Our detailed reports are being accepted by all insurance companies.

Neonatal Hearing Screening

Approximately 5 out of every 1 000 babies born in South Africa has some degree of hearing loss – that is 17 babies born per day in South Africa with a hearing problem!

It is crucial that a hearing loss be diagnosed as soon as possible after birth as early management of a hearing loss will make an enormous difference in the child’s language and communication development.

We perform hearing screening on all babies born in hospitals in our area, 1-2 days after birth.  We can also perform this test privately should you wish to bring your baby at a later stage to one of our practices.

The test is a quick, non-invasive and painless procedure which does not require any cooperation from the baby.

Hearing loss may affect a child’s speech and overall academic development if not detected and managed at an early stage.

Tinnitus Management

Tinnitus can be described as a sound experienced in one or both ears or even centrally in the brain, where no external stimuli is present.

It is most often described as a ringing sensation, but can also be experienced as a buzzing noise, pulsating heartbeat, whistling, hissing, chirping, etc.  Most important is to determine the cause for the tinnitus.

In order to do so a thorough hearing evaluation is required.  Thereafter the audiologist might work in a team with other professionals (e.g. Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist) or offer you a tinnitus management programme.

This tinnitus management programme consists of different components, e.g.

counselling, life style changes, as well as sound therapy (the use of external sound generators to mask the effect of the tinnitus).

Our team of professionals have a vast experience in this field and our success rate at our practice is really gratifying.
